Supporting Red Robin

John Kelleher asked 10 years ago

The new growth on red robin plants are inclined to sag forwards and downward to the ground. My question is, should I stake them upright with bamboos before trimming the side of the hedging, or trim as they are. The only thing is if I trim as is, I will be cutting approx. 12 to 18 inches off any plants growing tip that’s leaning forward and down. It is a relatively new hedge and is only 3 feet in height and I wish it to grow up to 10 feet. Also, there is a dividing blackthorn hedge directly behind it, will it hinder/impact the red robin in any way? Is it necessary for it to be removed at this stage or can this be done later?

Cut back the lfoppy shoots ahrd to encourage more upright re-growth.
The hedge behind will slow the growth of the new hedge.
