Hi Gerry, when laying stepping stones (unconnected) from my patio to my shed through my lawn, do I need to use sand & cement as a subbase, sand or can i just lay directly on topsoil?
The easiest way is to lay the slabs out on the grass where you want to place them and when you are happy with how they look, just cut down with a spade around the sides of the slab.
Then take up the slab and cut out the sod to the depth that will suit the thickness of the slab, levelling the soil surface when the sod is taken away.
The slab should end up about 1 cm below the soil surface, so allow for a little sinkage that will give the right depth. If you set them at the level of the soil surface, or just below, the sinkage will allow them to settle a little over a few months.
