Are there any disadvantages to using a stone / slate or gravel mulch on beds to stop weeds.

Stone mulch is fine when the planting is restricted and just for decoration, but when shrubs and flowers at normal spacing mature and shed lots of leaves, there can be a build-up of leaf-mould that can lead to weed growth on top.
At that stage, it is difficult to control weeds growing in the mulch, or to remove it, whereas bark will have rotted away after two or three years, unless topped up.
