Acer disease brown dots

Mary O\’Shea asked 16 years ago

Every year my trees develop this type of fungus? starts on trunk and extends to branches. White sticky spots with brown dot in centre until it covers the whole trunk and all branches. Nimrod spray takes it away, but it returns the next year. Also stops new growth until I manage to clear it. Any help would be appreciated.

This is not a disease. It is a pest called horse chestnut scale, which can affect acers and lime trees very badly, causing dieback fo branches, and is widespread in the Dublin area.

You need to use an insecticide whenever you see this pest.
