could you please advise what way to plant alder whips? do i need manure -compost etc in the planting of them now?

Shelter belts are best planted into dead sod sprayed with Roundup or cultivated.
If the soil is good there is no need for fertilizer or compost. Alder fixes its own nitrogen on root nodules.
