Our plant leaves have suddenly turned black and wilted. Looks dead, in fact. Other winters it has kept bright and green. Should I do anything with it now, or wait until spring and prune it hard and see if it comes back again? It’s a long-established plant.

It would seem that the plant’s root system has been affected and the leaves turn black when deprived of water. It is possibly honey fungus or some other root rot fungus, or it could be affected by a fungus at soil level, although when this happens usually only some branches are affected and not others.
Leave it until May and see waht happens but it is unlikely to recover.
