Bark eaten from tree

Bridie O Brien asked 16 years ago

I have just noticed that a young hawthorn Paul Scarlett has a portion of bark missing from the bottom of the trunk. It measures about 6 inches long by about 1 inch wide. What animal could have done this can the tree survive? Is there anything i should do now? Regards ,Bobbi

The most likely culprit is a rabbit. Wrap the damage with black polythene which will help healing and prevent further damage.
