brooms too big

Seamus Weldon asked 16 years ago

Planted 2 brooms 3 years ago, have pruned fairly hard each year but they are just getting too big with strong branches & a bit bare at bottom. Can I cut back to 3 feet & remove some more branches.Always get very beautiful flowering & colour. They are planted about 3 ft back on both sides of driveway. Help.

Brooms, Cytisus species, can not be cut back very hard into old wood or they will not re-sprout, only prune back on the green shoots that flower this year.

Spanish broom, Spartium junceum, is a different plant and can be cut back hard.
