The leaves on one of my apple trees goes brown during the summer every year and I wonder if there is anything that I can do now to guard against this happening this year.

The apple variety affected is probably susceptible to apple scab disease and you can spray against this with captan or Roseclear starting when the leaves are small and repeating once a month to July.
