Apple tree (bramley seedling) purchased last year is showing brown sunken marks on the bark. There are two of them like this. What is this? Is it serious? What can be done?

That is apple canker, or possibly canker caused by brown rot fungus. It is more prevalent in wet weather and on heavy soil. Prune out the affected branches.

It may, or may not, have been present when you purchased. Some garden centres offer a plant guarantee.
