Caterpillar on white birch

Grainne Smith asked 8 years ago

Hi Gerry, I’ve a beautiful white birch tree that has recently become infested by mini green caterpillars. Can you please advise how I can remove them before my poor tree ends up leafless? Many thanks.

The caterpillars along the edge of the leaves are sawfly caterpillars. They feed for a couple of weeks, then pupate and turn into adults.

The damage to the tree is minimal and it will re-grow leaves.
