Conifers for coastal areas

Martin Forde asked 12 years ago
Would it be adviseable to plant JUNIPERUS COMMUNIS “HIBERNICA” or JUNIPERUS SCOPULORUM “SKYROCKET” in a coastal area in west of Ireland, (Galway) which has frequent strong winds, laden with salt, on an elevated site?

These are both ‘pencil’ junipers and they will not form a good columnar shape in an exposed place, especially with salt gales which will burn them on the windward side. Low-growing common juniper varieties, Juniperus communis, would be alright but still might get some damage from salt. In exposed areas, juniper responds by hugging the ground and making a low mound.
