Contorted Willow leaves withering

Michael McGahon asked 16 years ago

Most of the leaves on my Contorted Willows are withering. Other varieties of willow are doing very well. They started the season very well and have deteriorated in the last few days.On the older Contorted Willows the upper leaves on the new growth are OK at the moment but the rest are dark brown and dried out. This is happening to the side shoots as well.We have had a lot of strong winds recently. They are in damp ground in which they usually thrive.

This is a bad attack of willow canker disease to which the contorted willow is very prone. It is a disease of wet conditions and usually much more severe near ground level where it is damper.

Control is not really possible and persistently damaged plants are usually removed.
