greenflies on silver birch

nora jackson asked 17 years ago

hi gerry, our street has about 6 silver birch trees, all around 20-25 yrs old . no troubles until now, but this year they are infested with white and green flies, we park under these trees and there is a sticky coating and flies all over the cars every day. the trees are as high as the houses–2 stories–so no chance of spraying!!. can you advise –or will a severe frost in the winter take care of the problem if we wait it out? thanks grerry.

Birch and other trees can become infested with greenflies and the deposits can be troublesome. Some years are clear and the problem usually eases after a few weeks when the predators and parasites of greenflies build up.
