Is it possible to grow tomatoes and peppers without using a greenhouse ?

Tomatoes can be grown outdoors and do well in a warm summer in a sunny spot. Peppers can be grown outdoors too but need a good summer to succeed and even then do not produce more than a few peppers.
Both are really greenhouse plants for good results.
