Hi Gerry, It’s currenly apx 8 feet deep X apx 7 feeet high.I heard that you can cut it back hard on one side one year and repeat the process the following year.What would you advise please and Thanks.

Yes, most hedges, including escallonia can be cut back hard on top or on the sides, which is called ‘breasting’.
 Cut back an even amount in late March and the other side, one or two years later, depending on recovery which is usually rapid.
