Hazelnut trees

Maeve Watson asked 14 years ago

We have fruit trees, plum, pear, apple, morello cherry and sweet cherry. The plum has had lots of fruit over the last 5 years but didn’t fruit this year and looks unwell, the pear hasn’t ever fruited (5 yrs old) the fruit arrives but is blown off, the cherrys are good as are the apples. We would love to plant more trees and were thinking of hazel nut or some other edible nut, what would you recommend and how deep to plant them etc

Plum trees sometimes over-crop and rest for a year, or it is possible that it has got silver leaf disease, which is common.

Hazel nut trees can be planted along a boundary and need about 5 metres of space. Plant to the top of the pot. Squirrels are attracted to them.
