our lawn is badly covered in moss we are considering digging it up and resetting do you think this is really necessary or is there anything else we can try first?

Buy a small fertiliser distributor at a garden centre. Apply sulphate of iron for moss control and feed with some lawn fertiliser or high potash fertiliser at the end of March.
It would be a complete waste of time and effort to re-lay the lawn.
