I have 2 lilac bushes in my garden about 5 years old which have never flowered. What is the reason for this, am i doing something wrong?

Lilac often takes a few years to grow branches before flowering. Do not prune or feed, except a shake of potash perhaps. They will flower in another couple of years. It is a small tree rather than a shrub and needs to make size.
