I planted a magnolia Susan this spring in the garden and it was full of flowers in May but after they were gone no leaves appeared. What do you think happened?

It is possible that the tree had a root rot and died just after flowering.
Or if leaves appeared briefly or the buds began to break, that snails ate the leaves before they expanded.
