a friend taking down a big conifer (1 1/2m high) from her garden. can i save it and move it into my garden? will it survive the move? any suggestions as to protecting roots and dehydration?

An established conifer, probably a cypress or thuja of some kind, is very unlikely to survive a move. Try in April and see what happens, Placing a windbreak fence around it reduces drying out.
