My lawn is sort of yellow in patches could you tell me what its from? how could i stop it from spreading?

It is possibly casued by the feeding of leather jacket grubs on the roots of the grass. These will disappear when the birds discover them, or when they hatch out as daddy-long-legs, or it might be just that patches are poor soil.
Give the whole lawn a feed of spring lawn feed or a high-nitrogen fertilizer and it will green up.
