Is Phyllostachys nigra a runner or clumper and what to do with it all brown leaves falling off?

The black bamboo is a clump-forming species and a slow spreader.
Foliage is lost if the site is too exposed or the plant has flowered.
Bamboo does not feeding in reasonably fertile ground or simply mulch with garden compost or other organic material.
