what could i plant on a ditch for privacy and shelter that does not require a lot of maintenance.and blends in with the countryside there was briars but when the farmer in the next field was doing drainage all the bushes we cut down, it feels so bare now .it is an area of about 20m in length. i was thinking of those red reed you see as it adds some colour and it looks wild blending in with the countryside

If the bushes were simply cut down, they will all sprout again and grow back. So you may not need to plant any, but you could plant some into gaps. The best hedgerows plants are hawthorn, blackthorn, holly and hazel, with some spindle, wild cherry, wild crab and guelder rose.
Wait and see how the plants recover.
