Can climbing roses be planted permanently in large pots or must they be sown into the actual soil

Climbing roses are not so happy in a pot …and remember you have to water and feed them all the time.

 If the reason for growing in a pot is concrete or tarmac in the way, it is easier in the long run to cut a hole in the concrete and let the rose root down into the soil.
