planting poppy seeds

Anne McGeough asked 12 years ago

I have had some good success this year with poppies and now have several withered stalks with seed heads. Should I collect the seeds and plant them or should I leave them to reseed naturally? If I should collect and plant, when should I do this?

You can do either. Collect the seeds when the pods start to shed … pulling up the plants or cutting the stems and carefully hanging them upside down over a sheet of newspaper.

Or just take a pinch of seed from a few open pods and keep the seeds in a paper envelope in a cool dry place, or a fridge, and sow in spring directly outdoors, or in a seed tray.
