I’m so upset at finding one of my beautiful Victoria plum trees with a large branch broken off, as it was totally weighed down with fuit. I sawed off the remainder of the branch, but the wound left on the tree is about 4 inches long and 2 inches wide. The wound is about 4ft from the base of the tree. Will I have to lose the tree? There are branches with fruit below where the wound is.

Plum trees ofter break branches under a heavy load of fruit. The fruit should be thinnedto reduce the load as the tree will often not ripen any of a large crop. Or the branches can be supported with a stake.
Leave the damaged area be … it might prove to be a point of entry for silverleaf disease but there is not much you can do.
Pruning paint, if you can get it, might help.
