I have grown onion sets put them in March the tops have grown to about 12″ but the onions have not grown at all and feel very soft to touch as if empty inside, what have i done wrong can you help please?

It is normal for onion set plants to grow up that tall or taller and later they bulb up, assuming they are in sunshine and the soil is reasonably good. If the soil is a bit low in nutrients, a liquid feed would be worthwhile.
