I have roses planted along each side of my drive-way, but some are badly diseased and need to be removed. What kind of plant/s would be most suitable to put in the subsequent gaps?

Roses require spraying in most cases to counter rose blackspot disease and this probably explains their decline. If you spray from early spring and feed a couple of times, they should recover.
If you want to replace them you could use shrubs in a combination of your choice. Much depends on how much space is available as most shrubs will grow much bigger than roses. You should consult our Plant finder in Know-how and see if you can identify kinds that might be suitable, also taking soil conditions into account. After that, this is very much a matter of personal choice.
