Would like some advise or suggestions on shrubs or trees (not cypress) as wind shelter.

Much depends on the space available from big pine trees to a low clipped hedge, and whether is it by the sea side.
Good plants inland include pine, birch, hazel, holly and hawthorn, willow and alder on wet soil.
By the sea, pine, sea buckthorn, griselinia. olearia and holly.
