An any for a vegetable plot should be sunny, reasonably sheltered, without tree roots underneath and with a spade-depth of good soil or more. More at: https://gardenie.wpengine.com/gerrycategory/types-vegetable-growing/?id=5628
You can kill the grass by simply turning down the sod when digging but this does require a bit more effort.
Or you can do so by covering with old carpet or black plastic, but that takes a few months, especially for dandelions and the like, and time is running short. You can also use Roundup as directed on the pack. It does not leave residues.
