I unfortunately stripped the bark from the base of a very young brich when strimming. The damage is about an inch in length but doesnt go completely around the tree. What can I do to save the tree or is it a lost cause.

Strimming damage can prove fatal, if the bark is removed all the way around, or if fungal diseases get in through the cut surface, but most trees survive.
It often works to immediately bind the wound with strips of black refuse sack plastic and leave this in place for one year or more. But this really works best when wound is fresh.
If you decide not to bind the wound, allow the area to dry by removing completely any grass or weed, allowing the to keep the wound dry and hopefully reducing the danger of a fungal rot getting in.
