mature treeslike varigated popular and mature shrubs are dying.I lose 5 or 6 each year in different parts of the gardens. Drainage is good, it must be some disease i feel ??

This is probably caused byhoney fungus, which can kill most woody species, but normally knocks a few occasionally. Other diseases can affect individual species and the effect can be cumulative. Variegated poplar routinely suffers from poplar canker after a few years.
Nothing to do, only remove affected plants.
