Can you please advise best solution to destroy an active wasps nest which has taken over the compost bin. They can be seen entering and exiting from underneath the plastic lid.

They may just be feeding on something in the bin, or there may be a nest. You can get anti-wasp products. But you need to be careful.
On the other hand, wasps are beneficial insects in that they destroy a lot of caterpillars, using them as food for their larvae and the wasps will all die when frost comes in autumn. If you can leave them be, do so. If there are dangers to children or passers by, consider control or get a pest remover to do it for you.
