We just closed off and put top soil into raised bed, we did not kill grass before hand, as we are new to vegetable growing, I am wondering if we can now start off some vegetables in our raised bed, or do we need to put in manure on top of the top soil. please advise what is next step and what to plant in our new raised bed. if you have covered the grass with soil, that should kill it off. If there were perennial weeds, such as dandelions, present, these might push through to the surface the new bed, and can be removed.
Manure is normally dug into the soil, but yolu can do this in winter.
For now, sow seeds of lettuce, radish, rocket, white turnips, carrots, peas, chinese vegetables and french beans and see how you get on. All of these are quite quick to mature and are likely to give some results.
