I have a 6 yr old Wisteria climbing over a small summer house. I want to knock down the house ,but I dont want to loose my Wisteria .There is nowhere nearby to retrail it over. I would like to therefore to convert the wisteria into a small tree .The wisteria trunk is upright to 5′ 8″ and about one and a half inches in girth. I have trimmed back all the trailers in late summer and any suckers and lower trunk branches .Can you guide me in the right process to conversion?

The stem of wisteria is not strong and tends to lean over. A standard wisteria would normally have a stake to support the stem. A heavy stake can be obtrusive and a solid steel rod is more suitable.
Another possibility would be to build a tri-pod of poles and train the wisteria onto it.
