Blarney Castle & Gardens new gardens
The development of Blarney Castle’s gardens continues in 2017. Head gardener Adam Whitbourn has revealed plans for two new areas – a new Jungle Garden is to be created in an overgrown area adjacent to the existing Tropical border, and following a successful collecting trip in Northern Vietnam last November, there are plans in place to develop a Vietnamese woodland garden using wild-collected specimens.

Mindful gardening
Recently, Irish Garden carried out the first-ever survey done in Ireland linking gardening to mindfulness, and 89% of respondents say they have experienced mindfulness in their garden. Gardening was understood to mean the action and non-action of spending time in the garden. A massive 1,567 people responded, a wide mix of social status, age profile and gardening ability. Bloom success
Almost 115,000 people attended Bord Bia’s Bloom festival in the Phoenix Park, Dublin over the June bank holiday weekend, a record attendance for Bloom with glorious sunshine helping to attract huge crowds to the 70 acre site. Artisans, exhibitors and garden designers reporting huge interest and buoyant sales onsite, valued at over 7 million. Sales in the Plant Village were 50% up on last year, and an increase of 80% with varieties such as Cornus “China Girl’ and Lychnis flos-cuculi “Jenny’ selling out before midday every day. The judging panel awarded a total of 57 medals to show garden designers and nurseries including; 24 Gold, 12 Silver Gilt, 13 Silver and 8 Bronze and the People’s Choice Award was won by Barry Kavanagh from Cavan for his Across Boundaries garden.
Cluster of coastal gardens open
A cluster of stunning, coastal gardens on the Waterford/Cork border are teaming up with Blackwater Garden Centre on Sunday, 10 July, for a showcase event, funds raised to the Alzheimer Society of Ireland. Newtown House and the Blackwater Garden Centre in Kinsalebeg are teaming up with the Rock House, Ardmore, Deiseart, Rocky Road, Ardmore and the Knight’s garden in Ballynamona, Ardmore. Participating gardens will be open from 12pm to 5pm.
Art Exhibition at Ballymaloe House
Ireland’s Blue Book has announced that the outdoor sculptural trail exhibition FORM16 Silent Expression is taking place at Ballymaloe House, Co. Cork from 21 June to 31 August. Over 90 pieces created by 31 Irish and International sculptors, including Martin Lyttle, Sonia Caldwell and Krystina Pomeroy are sited on the front lawn of Ballymaloe House.

Carrigtwohill Open Gardens
Two Carrigtwohill Gardens will open to the public on Saturday, 2 July, from 10am to 4pm to raise money for the Cork Association for Autism. The Sensory Garden at Greenville House will open to the public along with Noel O’Keeffes beautiful cottage garden which is situated on an acre of land. They welcome the public along to see these gardens on July 2nd. Lafcadio Hearn Gardens

Fota House ISNA Plant Fair
On Sunday, 18 September, Fota House will host the Irish Specialist Nursery Association Plant Fair. The ISNA was established to represent the smaller, specialised nurseries, which offer a wide variety of plants, services and advice. Most of the stock that they produce is propagated by themselves. Tag Des Gartens
Between 4 and 6 September 2016, spoga+gafa will transform Cologne into a global marketplace for everything needed for outdoor living. This year will see around 2,000 exhibitors from around 60 countries exhibit their outdoor innovations at the world’s leading trade fair for the garden and leisure industry. After its successful premiere, Tag Des Gartens, the garden exhibition for everyone will take place in Hall 8 and the adjacent Rheinpark on 3 and 4 September.

Wexford’s Veg Patch
Michelle and Mervyn Morrison sell fresh vegetables directly to restaurants and food outlets, and now to the larger community. The Veg Patch is located in Effernoge, Ferns, producing all the vegetables that are for sale using only organic methods of production. Heritage Gardens Conference
Northern Ireland Heritage Gardens Trust and the Office of Public Works has announced the dates for the next conference on 7 to 9 October. The well-established 3-day format will again be adopted with the topic of Commemoration Gardens and Gardening at the exciting venue of Dublin Castle.
Russborough Restoration
The 18th century walled garden at Russborough House, Blessington, Co. Wicklow is being restored by members of the RHSI. In 2011 members of the RHSI came on board to restore it to its former glory. With improvements made to date, it is hoped that in 2017 many foreign visitors will be able to take a guided tour of the garden given by members of the RHSI. An G?irdin Beo is a non-profit community organisation based on two acres of land beside St. Leo’s Convent. It aims to establish a garden that will enable a diverse mix of people to connect with each other, through nature, art and creativity; and the growing and making of food. Gardening Gala
The Royal Horticultural Society of Ireland was founded in 1816 and has its bicentenary this year. In celebration, it has arranged a Gardening Gala to be held at the RDS, Ballsbridge, Dublin on 30 September. Gardeners and international plant-hunters, Monty Don, Dan Hinkley, and Roy Lancaster will be speakers, and Chelsea gold-winning florist, Jenny Murphy, will start the proceedings with a flower-arranging demonstration. Waterford garden art exhibition
An exhibition of drawings, paintings, sculptures and other work from artists inspired by the gardens and plants at Tourin, Cappoquin, Co. Waterford, will be on display there in early October. Art historian, Patricia Butler, will launch the show on Saturday, 8 October, at 6.30 pm. This is the second of a series of Gardens of Ireland Art Exhibitions. Kilmacurragh was the first garden to invite artists to paint subjects in the garden and exhibit their work in a successful show which ran at Glasnevin last year. Twenty artists were invited to Tourin. The exhibition is open daily, 1 to 5pm until October 16.
Yanny Petters solo exhibition
The Olivier Cornet Gallery will present a solo exhibition by botanical artist Yanny Petters, opening to the public on 10 October.
Yanny Petters creates detailed paintings of plants and their habitats. This exhibition of “verre eglomis?’ panels is dedicated to Wilma Petters whose garden was the inspiration for these twelve paintings.

Recently, Irish Garden carried out the first-ever survey done in Ireland linking gardening to mindfulness, and 89% of respondents say they have experienced mindfulness in their garden. Gardening was understood to mean the action and non-action of spending time in the garden. A massive 1,567 people responded, a wide mix of social status, age profile and gardening ability.
